New Zealand Native Seaweed – Stamp Issue

With the success of the New Zealand Native Ferns and New Zealand Native Trees botanical issues, New Zealand Post asked Di and Stephen to design yet another botanical stamp series - this time celebrating the Native Seaweeds of New Zealand. Five seaweeds were chosen to represent the issue. Off Stephen and Di went to see Wendy Nelson at the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research, who kindly spent a lot of time with the duo choosing seaweeds to showcase and making a trip out into the field to collect live samples of each. They proved to be a very challenging subject to illustrate, and some species not even NIWA had good reference to in their photo libraries due to their complexity to capture.
